Baldwin effect for the narrow Fe K α lines observed in Active Galactic Nuclei
نویسندگان
چکیده
The majority of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) observed by XMM-Newton reveal narrow Fe Kα lines at ∼ 6.4 keV, due to emission from cold (neutral) material. There is an X-ray Baldwin effect in Type I AGN, in that the equivalent width of the line decreases with increasing luminosity, with weighted linear regression giving EW ∝ L −0.17 ± 0.08 (Spearman Rank probability of > 99.9 per cent). With current instrumental capabilities it is not possible to determine the precise origin for the narrow line, with both the Broad Line Region and putative molecular torus being possibilities. A possible explanation for the X-ray Baldwin effect is a decrease in covering factor of the material forming the fluorescence line.

Narrow Iron Kα Lines in Active Galactic Nuclei: Evolving Populations?
We assemble a sample consisting of 66 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from literature and the XMM-Newton archive in order to investigate the origin of the 6.4 keV narrow iron Kα line (NIKAL). The X-ray Baldwin effect of the NIKAL is confirmed in this sample. We find the equivalent width (EW ) of the NIKAL is more strongly inversely correlated with Eddington ratio (E) than the 2-10 keV X-ray lumin...
متن کاملOn the origin of the iron Kα line cores in Active Galactic Nuclei
X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton have shown that there are relatively narrow cores to the iron Kα emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Plausible origins for this core emission include the outer regions of an accretion disk, a pc-scale molecular torus, and the optical broad-line region (BLR). Using data from the literature it is shown that no correlation exists between t...
متن کاملAn Empirical Ultraviolet Template for Iron Emission in Quasars as Derived from I Zw 1
We present an empirical template spectrum suitable for fitting and subtract-ing/studying the Fe ii and Fe iii emission lines in the restframe ultraviolet spectra of quasars and active galatic nuclei, the first empirical ultraviolet iron template to cover the full range of λ1250−3090Å. Iron emission is often a severe contaminant in optical– ultraviolet spectra of active galactic nuclei and quasa...
متن کاملThe Baldwin Effect and Black Hole Accretion: a Spectral Principal Component Analysis of a Complete Quasar Sample
We have performed a spectral principal component analysis (SPCA) for an essentially complete sample of 22 low-redshift QSOs with spectral data from Ly to H . SPCA yields a set of independent principal component spectra, each of which represents a set of relationships among QSO continuum and line properties. We find three significant principal components, which account for 78% of the total intri...
متن کاملA New Dual-component Photoionization Model for the Narrow Emission-line Regions in Active Galactic Nuclei
Having found that type 1 Seyfert nuclei have excess [Fe VII] λ6087 emission with respect to type 2s, Murayama & Taniguchi have proposed that the high-ionization nuclear emission-line region (HINER) traced by the [Fe VII] λ6087 emission resides in the inner wall of dusty tori. The covering factor of the torus is usually large (e.g., ∼ 0.9). Further, electron density in the tori (e.g., ∼ 107–8 cm...
